166 homes, built in the 80’s

Crofton Downs was constructed in the 1980’s by The Richards Group of Washington, an owner/general contractor of the land that makes up the community. The builder was registered as a limited partnership in the State of New York, which explains why the streets in our community are named in a New York theme.

Dartmouth - Hyannis - Westport - Weymouth - Yarmouth

These are the 5 streets in the community - Dartmouth Lane with 24 homes, Hyannis Lane with 14 homes, Westport Lane with 42 homes, Weymouth Lane with 42 homes, and Yarmouth Lane with 44 homes. Currently, the community is 85% owner occupied with the remaining mix of rentals of the long term nature. This creates a terrific mix in the community of well rooted families interspersed with new faces usually on an assignment in the .gov or .mil

Home Types

Crofton Downs has much of the homes built in the “semi-detached” style that allows for close knit neighbors while keeping home spaces private. This construction style allowed the builder to maximize the numbers built around common driveways serving 6-7 homes on each court. For families this is a huge draw as kids playing on the court, well off the streets, is very desirable indeed. Two-story colonials win out in the numbers built, while there are a fair share of two-story split foyers, and more than a few Cape Cods sprinkled in the neighborhood.

Construction

The homes are solidly wood frame built, originally with aluminum siding or originally upgraded with brick facades. The roofs are all asphalt shingled. Over the years, many owners have chosen to replace the aluminum siding with vinyl for a refresh of their well-loved homes, but for many, the siding has continued to look great with a little bit of care. None of the homes are sprinklered as that requirement for new home construction did not go into effect until January 1, 2009.

Lot Sizes

While running on the smaller size, our lots are just big enough to take care of in less than half of the day. Most are fenced in the standard privacy fence type, which adds to the curb appeal for owners. The community is full of trees with many varieties dotted throughout the lots - maple, sycamore, crape myrtle, cherry, and pear are the dominant ones. This adds to the cool breezes in the spring and summer as the wind rustles through the leaves. The fall is an explosion of color in each owner’s lot, as the trees peak in autumn color in October.
